INSTALLATION NOTES
==================

--Before installing OmniForm:

 -Log into your computer with Administrator privileges if you are installing on Windows 2000 or Windows NT.

 -Back up your OmniForm Forms.

 -Uninstall any previous versions of OmniForm and restart your computer.

  IMPORTANT: It is highly recommended that you restart your computer after uninstalling a previous version of OmniForm.

 -Close all other applications, especially anti-virus software.

--Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater is required

Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater is required to take full advantage of OmniForm 5.0. If you do not have Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater, OmniForm 5.0 installation will install it for you. If for some reason you need to reinstall Internet Explorer later, you can run the setup program on the OmniForm installation CD from this location:

drive:\OmniForm\Internet Explorer\1033\ie5setup.exe

--Installing Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard

The Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard is required if you want to use the feature that allows you to publish forms on your own Web site. For information on downloading this application, go to this Microsoft Web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q168/6/36.ASP

SUPPORTED SCANNERS
=====================

OmniForm works with many popular desktop scanners using the TWAIN interface. Supported scanners require a TWAIN source driver, which is provided by the scanner or interface card manufacturer. Please consult your scanners documentation for details about installing your scanner, interface card, and driver.

The Microsoft Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) device driver interface is supported on Windows ME and Windows XP systems. If a WIA device driver is available for your scanner and you are using Windows ME or Windows XP, it is recommended that you scan using the WIA interface instead of installing the TWAIN driver. If you are using Windows ME, you might not need to install the software that came with your scanner.

Please check ScanSofts Web site, www.scansoft.com, for the latest list of supported scanners. Click "scanner guide" from the ScanSoft home page.

OMNIFORM DOCUMENTATION
========================

--The OmniForm documentation (User Guide and Help) sometimes refers to the "full version of OmniForm."

The "full version" refers to OmniForm products that have both Form Designer and Form Filler capabilities. This is to distinguish it from OmniForm Filler, which has only the Form Filler and database management capabilities.

--The OmniForm Designer Guide and the OmniForm Filler Guide are available in PDF format inside the Documentation folder in your OmniForm installation folder.

OMNIFORM PREMIUM
======================

The OmniForm Premium version offers extra features and capabilities. It allows you to save and distribute forms in these additional file formats:

  --Hypertext Markup Language (HTML)
  --Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF)
  --Microsoft Word Rich Text Format (RTF)
  --OmniForm Markup Language (OFML)

If you have OmniForm Premium installed, "OmniForm Premium" will appear in the application title bar. For information on upgrading to OmniForm Premium, please go to www.scansoft.com and click the "products" link.

GENERAL NOTES
===============

--Mailable Filler Formats

The OmniForm and OmniForm Premium products include a trial license for a specified number of Mailable Fillers. The details of this license are described in an insert in your package. After you have used all your licensed number of uses, please contact ScanSoft (www.scansoft.com) to purchase additional licenses.

When opening the HTML version of Mailable Filler for the first time, users will be prompted to download a plug-in for their Web browsers.

--Maximum allowed records in OmniForm database

The maximum number of records allowed in an OmniForm database is 10,000, or approximately 5.4 MB of data across all records. Keep this in mind when collecting data from eOmniForm.com.

--Maximum allowed characters per record

You can enter a maximum of 65,000 characters of data per form record. An error may occur if you attempt to save a record containing data over the limit.

--Sample Folder Location

The location of the Sample Folder will vary depending on your operating system. The very first time you open a form in OmniForm, the Open dialog box defaults to the Sample Folder. Please take note of where this folder is located. You may also want to copy the folder to a more convenient location.

--Scan Manager no longer required

OmniForm now uses the Scanner Setup wizard to set up scanners. To open the Scanner Setup Wizard, choose Select Scanner... in OmniForms File menu. Or, click Start in the Windows taskbar and choose Programs > ScanSoft OmniForm 5.0 > Scanner Setup Wizard. The wizard asks you questions and provides instructions as you go through each screen.

--Using OmniForm's Print Driver on Windows 2000 and Windows NT

The Print to OmniForm feature allows you to convert forms by printing them from other applications. On Windows 2000, you must be logged in with Administrator privileges in order to use the Print to OmniForm feature from other applications. If you do not have Administrator privileges, you can print out and scan your form into OmniForm instead.

When you use the Print to OmniForm feature on Windows 2000 or Windows NT, and you do not have OmniForm open at the time, OmniForm will be started automatically. When started automatically, OmniForm uses the login of "Default User" rather than your current login. For this reason, when you save your form, the Desktop location that is displayed will be the Desktop of the "Default User" rather than your own Desktop. In this case, you can save your form to a location other than the Desktop, and then close and restart OmniForm to see your own Desktop again. To avoid this problem, start OmniForm before using the Print to OmniForm feature.

--Running OmniForm as Restricted User

If you are planning to run OmniForm as a normal (non-administrator) user under a secure Windows environment such as Windows NT or Windows 2000 with NTFS file systems, you need to modify the folder access permissions for the OmniForm data files in order to take full advantage of OmniForm's features.

OmniForm installs its data files and sample OmniForm Form files under the Common Documents folder on Windows NT and Windows 2000 systems. (The default folder locations are: <windows directory>\Profiles\All Users\Documents and <installation drive>\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents, respectively.) Please make sure the user has rights to Read, Write, Execute (directory traversal), and Modify the Common Documents folder, the ScanSoft folder below it, and all subfolders within the ScanSoft folder. Please refer to your operating system's documentation on how to modify file system permissions.

The data files that OmniForm installs and/or creates by default in the Common Documents folder are as follows:

* Sample OmniForm files (*.ofm)
* User profile files
* Sample AutoFill list files
* Designer Toolkit files
* User dictionary files for the spell checker

The individual folders for these data files can be changed on a per user basis from within OmniForm. To do so, choose Options... in the Tools menu and click the File Locations tab.

KNOWN ISSUES
=============

--Some features not supported when saving as PDF

Some OmniForm features are not supported when saving a form in PDF format. For example, some calculations will not work, such as those applied to comb fields, and parentheses around numbers will not work to symbolize negative numbers.

--Digital Signatures not supported by Adobe Acrobat Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader does not have the required plug-in to recognize digital signature fields. When you save a form with a digital signature field to PDF format, and open the PDF file in Acrobat Reader 5.0, clicking the signature field will result in this message:

"The plug-in required by this signature field is unavailable. Information about the missing plug-in might be available on Adobes Web site."

--Netscape 6 Printing Problem

Netscape 6 cannot print more than one page of a form that has been converted to HTML.

--Certain form elements are not supported, or are handled differently, when converted to HTML format. For example:

 -Circle text fields are converted to radio buttons if they are grouped. If they are not grouped, they are converted to check boxes.

 -Comb fields are converted to rectangular-shaped fillable fields.

 -All elements that are aligned will default to top -alignment.

 -When collecting data for forms on the eOmniForm.com site, fillable graphic and signature fields might lose any data entered in them.

 -Autofill fields might not automatically fill other fields.

 -Line elements that are not horizontal or vertical might be dropped.

 -Some calculations, such as Record Count, might not work.

 -The Shrink Text to Fit feature might not work.

 -Prefill fields might be dropped.

--Do not use spaces in field names

Do not use spaces in field names if you plan on converting forms to HTML format or publishing forms to eOmniForm.com. This is because the HTML version of a form does not accept spaces in field names.

--kernel32.dll error causes unexpected exit when scanning from OmniForm

When scanning from OmniForm in Windows ME, a known bug in the driver for the CanoScan 650U, CanoScan 670U, and 656U REv 5.7 (Twain) scanners causes OmniForm to exit unexpectedly. ScanSoft is working with Canon to resolve the problem.

--ODBC error when exporting data with Entrust signatures

An ODBC error might occur when exporting OmniForm data digitally signed with an Entrust signature. This is a limitation of the ODBC driver, related to the value of the digital signature, which is exported along with the data.

--ODBC error when exporting data to open files

An ODBC error will occur if you export data from OmniForm to a file that is open. Close the target file before exporting data to it.

--"Data Must Match Field Type" option does not apply to all field types

OmniForm checks that data matches field type in the following fields only: alpha, number, currency, data, and time.

--Forms printed from Internet Explorer 5.0 might need print margins adjusted

Form opened in Internet Explorer 5.0 might have larger margins than those in the originally designed form. This could cause part of the form to be cut off when printing. To prevent this, use the Page Setup command in Internet Explorer's File menu to adjust page margins as necessary before printing.

--Cannot use Adobe Acrobat to open OmniForm 5.0.PDF file on installation CD

The OmniForm 5.0.PDF file in the OmniForm folder on the installation CD is a Microsoft Product Definition File that is required for installation. Although it has a PDF extension, it is not a portable document format file, and you cannot use Adobe Acrobat to open it.

--Error collecting data in eOmniForm.com

If an error occurs while eOmniForm.com is collecting data and it is unable to collect the data, it might still mark the data as collected. This could prevent collection of additional data due to record limitations in OmniForm. To work around this problem, you must recover the data so that it is once again marked as collectible. See OmniForm's Help for more information on recovering data.

--OLE Objects not supported in HTML format

Graphics that are inserted into an OmniForm Form as OLE objects are not supported when a form is converted to HTML format. Instead, insert a graphic by using the Graphic tool in Form Designer. This also applies when publishing forms to eOmniForm.com because published forms are converted to HTML format.

--Uninstalling OmniPage causes error in Scanner Setup Wizard

If you have both OmniPage Pro and OmniForm installed, uninstalling OmniPage will cause an error the next time you start the Scanner Setup Wizard to use with OmniForm. This is because a file necessary for the Scanner Setup Wizard is uninstalled during OmniPage uninstallation. To fix this, insert OmniForm's CD and choose the "Repair" option; the necessary file will be reinstalled automatically. Follow the instructions on the screen.

--Special instruction needed when sending Mailable Filler files to Microsoft Outlook users

When file attachments are opened directly from the Preview Pane of Microsoft Outlook, changes made to the files are not saved. Therefore, if someone double-clicks a Mailable Filler file to open it from the Preview Pane of Microsoft Outlook, changes made to the file (such as entered data) will not be retained. If you send a Mailable Filler file as an email attachment, please instruct the recipient to open the actual email message before opening the Mailable Filler file. Or, recipients can save the attachment to their disk before opening it.

--Problems exporting data to ODBC databases

The first time you export data to an ODBC database, an unexpected exit might occur at the end of the export process. This does not result in any data loss; the data will still be successfully exported. This problem might be caused by the ODBC Jet file, odbcjt32.dll version 4.00.4403.02 dated 8/8/99. To verify if you have this version, check the properties on your odbcjt32.dll file. To avoid this problem, it is recommended that you download and install the latest available version of MDAC, which provides updated ODBC drivers.
